Put these thoughts in my head into action Action beyond my own satisfaction Remembering what you told me and how you scold me I pull back the curtain you told me a lie Now I'm just standing still I know my place is pardoned Standing still But now my heart's been hardened When you look in the mirror is it crystal clear? You're not who you were - did they leave you behind? Trying to get it together in stormy weather Two roads diverge -- can't make up your mind So you're just standing still You know your place is pardoned Standing still But now your heart's been hardened

Beating Drum 04:27
My heart is a beating drum I thought we were having some fun Now she's wielding her words like a gun My heart, my heart is a beating drum My legs won't stop shaking in bed She got up inside of my head Now it seems as though I'm better off dead My legs, my legs won't stop shaking in bed I've gotta say She's got a way of making everything my fault Holding hands and feeling alive If you grip too tightly the flowers will die I'm in the squeeze and I'm trying to survive Holding hands and feeling alive And I've gotta say She's got a way of making everything my fault In the kitchen and full of regret She's got needs and they need to be met I tried to fool her, and take back my bet, Now I'm in the kitchen and full of regret And I've gotta say I've got a way of making everything her fault It's her fault

New City 03:59
Sad farewell Emerald city glow Maybe it's the people that you hold Hold on tight, this rental truck just might Break 55 if we drive all night Night is different here It's crystal clear This city never ever goes to Sleep my dear This cozy one bedroom Keeps us closer driving us apart It's driving us apart Saturday The 1 train takes us down To Chinatown to buy some food to Cook each day as we lay in our bed No AC Will August ever end? It's a full-time job to find work Perpetual machine You know what I mean We're just cogs in this clockwork city
4.
It's dirty, dirty, dirty Down doing the laundry He must be blind to not see the robot he's become A flight out of the country To check up on a factory Where they'll work for nearly nothing He's gonna make a fortune He sells himself for money But the house is nice and his teeth are white, oh Oh no You better watch your back and be careful who you trust There are robots among us They don't understand the warmth of human touch These robots among us It's shady, shady, shady In the land of milk of honey Where we walk the thin line between What we need and greed We'll do it for the money Cause though we're fake The benefits are great, oh Oh no You better watch your back and be careful who you trust There are robots among us They don't understand the warmth of human touch These robots among us
5.
I become the father As I slip under the water Looking for the purpose As I slide below the surface Losing all movement As my lungs fill with fliud Dreams are forgotten As I sink towards the bottom Then my heart begins to glow Cause I'm longing to be home and the surface slips away and steals the light of day And I'm breathing for the first time as I go down I'm breathing for the first time as I drown The plan goes into motion At night by the ocean Thinking of the distance and my lack of persistence Waves crash like thunder They're pulling me under Dreams are remembered In the sea in November And my heart begins to glow Cause I'm longing to be home and the surface slips away and steals the light of day And I'm breathing for the first time as I go down I'm breathing for the first time as I drown
6.
You rode your bike into my atmosphere With ocean breezes blowing in your hair I saw you down at the county store Yesterday, now I'm back for more I just wanted to say I'd never let you go My lifeline is tied to your soul I reach out to touch your hand As we're stepping out onto moonlit sand And love comes so easily in small coastal towns like these But in a couple of years after the pain and the tears Will you still cling so tight to me? I'd only known her for about a week When she proclaimed that she would marry me I wrote her a song on a cheap guitar It was out of tune, but it won her heart I just wanted to say I'd never let you go My lifeline is tied to your soul I reach out to touch your hand As we're stepping out onto moonlit sand And love comes so easily in small coastal towns like these But in a couple of years after the pain and the tears Will you still cling so tight to me? Can love come so easily? I don't know
7.
Hurricanes 04:37
I lost my mind All in due time I'm underneath these processed trees in hiding Outside my window The hurricanes blow I'm underneath these processed trees in hiding Will someone please heed the call? This is more than we're ready for I can hear the levee break and the ground begins to shake As the water rushes in I hung my head And knelt at her bed She said I know you have to go my darling Outside her window The ocean now flows She said I know you have to go my darling Will someone please heed the call? This is more than we're ready for I can hear the levee break and the ground begins to shake As the water rushes in

She took the cigarettes and all the coke and left me here an addict broke She had the cash to pay our rent she even found my secret stash now my money's all been spent And here I am In need of a revival All she left was her Bible So Lord, Lord, I'm on my knees for you She took the furniture too I never thought our love would fade True, I've always been one to doubt But I had her figured out I never thought our love would fade I'm stabbed by an unseen blade She took my confidence She took my pride Took my innocence She took me by surprise So here I am I'm ready for my revival Cause all she left was her Bible So Lord, Lord, I'm on my knees for you She took the furniture too I never thought our love would fade True, I've always been one to doubt But I had her figured out I never thought our love would fade I'm stabbed by an unseen blade Sure, I know we needed a tune-up but I could still hear the engine humming With the knife still in my back I never saw this one coming
9.
The take-off the long flight into the dark and moonless night The phone call that woke me cried That you had died Relationship broken For years we had not spoken I thought that you didn't care And I was scared All these years it's been the same You had your fortune and local fame Now you're gone and the phone call claims You left it all in my name The touchdown The sunrise I had to see with my own eyes The phone call that woke me said That you were dead You're gone Goodbye So long Too late You're gone
10.
When I wake up I press a pot and drink a cup In the morning air Birds are flying everywhere And when she wakes up I kiss her lips and fill her cup Sitting in our underpants when we feel the urge to dance So we do Turn off your cell phone and your pager This is major Let the stereo play We'll dance the morning away And when the day finally turns into afternoon We'll flip the record and dance to new tunes 'Cause we Will dance the morning away Don't care what the neighbors say Just let the stereo play All day
11.
As the morning breaks, first light She'll dress, soundless, and sigh Take the clothes from off the line That she forgot last night Will there still be work today? Some pennies toward the loan? Or will rich white men like me spend holiday at home? Shadow of consumer god The have-nots won't sing praise As your temple reaches higher broken hands they'll raise And as if it's not enough to roll my cigarettes She'll prostitute her little girl I'll inhale and forget Shadow of consumer god The have-nots won't sing praise As your temple reaches higher broken hands they'll raise I don't have to worry She doesn't have a prayer I'll drink my cup coffee And she'll stay way out there Invisible, forgotten, unthought of or unknown The fabric that she weaves decorates my home The irony of empire is that the untouched land seems to be our favorite vacation in the sand We want to retire to islands in the sun Yet all of these islands are fast becoming one They're fast becoming one
12.
Eyes Shut 03:00
Kneel down Close tight those eyes or I might Lose track of thoughts These words are all that I've got To keep on track To get off my back Guilty conscience Do you think that He watches me? Because my eyes are shut These shoes, this car I know they will take me far From here I'll go To where I don't really know But I'll give thanks Prosperity takes my work It's all me Don't say I'm lucky With my eyes shut I can't see them I don't want my eyes wide open After all, it makes it harder To pray With my eyes shut I can't see them I don't want my eyes wide open After all, it makes it harder

about

"Beautiful, melodic, synth-based music. Gimme one good reason why you shouldn’t download it NOW." - Derek Webb

"Evenings and Weekends presents a musical framework often reminiscent of the new wave music of the late '70s and early '80s. The album contains solid, melodic vocals that add a unique alt-country quality to the work." - Jackson Free Press

"Synthy and poppy...we want to take the opportunity to thank SYNTHAR for providing us with tunes" - NPR's Science Friday

"...a late 70’s new wave sound with a more modern style that is something like Devo meets Radiohead. I’m not kidding. Evenings and Weekends packs a powerful one-two punch with creative recordings and some incredibly hooky songs." - ObviousPop.com

SYNTHAR bio

SYNTHAR was formed in 2005 from the ashes of the short-lived Seattle pop band Biltus. As drummer Joel Heng Hartse, guitarist Matt Basinger, and bassist/producer Andrew Best prepared to go their separate ways for grad school, the idea of a synth-based “internet band” was proposed, and soon a mutual friend, Johnny Bertram, was added to email threads discussing the band’s sound, songs, and plans.

The band, now known as SYNTHAR, primarily became a collaboration of Bertram (also known for his southern rock/alt-country records with Johnny Bertram and the Golden Bicycles) and Best (founder of successful synthesizer software company Blamsoft), with occasional collaborations from the others. Instrumental tracks and lyrical ideas flew between members via email from home bases in New York City, Silicon Valley, Jackson, MS, and occasionally rural China and Indonesia.

What emerged was Evenings & Weekends, a relentlessly catchy 12-song synth-pop record of longing and alienation in the postmodern global world – labyrinthine synth lines and intricate production wrapped around songs about death and loss, politics and greed, love and hope, all sung in Bertram’s warm, rich voice.

The album was released in November 2007 to immediate acclaim. Nashville singer/songwriter Derek Webb called Evenings and Weekends “beautiful, melodic, synth-based music.” Attention from local press and music blogs followed, and SYNTHAR tracks began to be featured regularly on radio shows and videos from the popular NPR program Science Friday.

Evenings & Weekends disappeared from the internet as the band moved on to other projects, but on the album’s 10th anniversary (November 27, 2017), it will be re-released across all online music platforms with two bonus tracks, “Modern Day Miracle” and “Pawn Shop Christmas.” An additional bonus track, “Loved Back,” is available exclusively via purchasing the album on Bandcamp.
